SON calls for cooperation of consumers over substandard products
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) in Benin has appealed to consumers to report any sale of substandard goods to them for necessary action. The Head of SON in the state, Mr Ojo Akogun, made the appeal in an interview in Benin.
Akogun said that SON needed the assistance of consumers to curtail the circulation of substandard products. Akogun reiterated that consumers had the right to complain and report any purchase of substandard goods because they had every right to get value for their money.
He decried the high incidence of re-bagging of rice, cements and the influx of expired and second-hand goods and wines from foreign countries into the state. He advised consumers to always insist on the correct sizes and quantities at the point of purchase. He said that in spite of the sensitization of the public in Edo on such rights, majority would not demand to weigh their products.
Akogun called on citizens not to make the state a dumping ground for substandard goods. Akogun said that the organisation could only monitor warehouses for fake products because it was not situated at the points of entry. He said that the state office had only handled few cases concerning electronics, granite and car batteries which were replaced for the affected consumers.
