African fashion designers supported by Afreximbank’s Creative Africa Nexus shine at Paris Fashion week

Two weeks after the highly successful inaugural Tranoï Tokyo trade show held in Japan from September 4-5, over 20 exceptional fashion brands from across Africa and the diaspora showcased their designs at the Paris Fashion Week on 26-29 September at Tranoï, Palais Brongniart as part of Afreximbank’s CANEX Presents Africa initiative. Afreximbank’s dedicated scenographic exhibition space  showcased a diverse array of brands, including Ethiopia’s Mafi Mafi, Kenya’s Adele Dejak, We Are NBO, and Katush, Zanzibar’s Doreen Mashika, and Nigeria’s Emmy Kasbit, WUMAN and Bloke. Representing South Africa were JUDY SANDERSON, David Tlale, and Thebe Magugu, while Zimbabwe was represented by Vanhu Vamwe. Other incredible brands included The Cloth from Trinidad and Tobago, Olooh and Kente Gentlemen from Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana’s Christie Brown and Beyodoe, Late For Work from Morocco and Margaux Wong from Burundi.

The event climax was a highly anticipated runway show, celebrating the richness and diversity of Africa’s design talent. Held beneath the majestic columns of the iconic Palais Brongniart, the show marked a historic moment in the global fashion calendar. Artistic Director Jenke Ahmed Tailly, renowned for his visionary approach, curated an exclusive fashion show featuring three distinguished African designers Sukeina, Lagos Space Programme and Thebe Magugu, each presenting unique collections that embodied the essence of African creativity and craftsmanship. This presentation highlighted the synergy between tradition and modernity, with designs that ranged from bold, avant-garde statements to intricate, culturally inspired pieces. The event provided a powerful platform for these designers to showcase their work to an international audience, affirming Africa’s growing influence on the global fashion scene. From vibrant textiles and intricate patterns to contemporary silhouettes and sustainable innovations, the runway show captured the continent’s rich heritage and innovative approach to fashion. Each designer brought their distinct vision to life, offering a fresh perspective on what African fashion represents in the 21st century.

By providing an exclusive platform to these brands to showcase their designs and engage with international buyers, we are not only developing the continent’s creative sectors but also expanding Africa’s influence in global cultural trade.” Given the relevance and opportunities provided by the creative economy as a key driver for development and job creation, Afreximbank has deployed the Creative Africa Nexus Programme (CANEX) to facilitate the development and growth of the creative and cultural industries in Africa and the diaspora. The programme provides a range of financial and non-financial interventions to support Africa’s production, trade, and investment in creative content. CANEX Presents Africa provides emerging fashion designers with a platform for development through the  transfer of skills, linkages and partnerships as well as  market access opportunities aimed at equipping the participants with skills for creating financially sustainable businesses capable of being scaled. The inaugural CANEX Presents Africa event took place in  Porto, Portugal in October 2021. To date, 80 designers from 27 African countries and the Diaspora have benefited from the initiative.

FirstBank Elephant girls crowned zone 3 champions, qualify for WBLA final round

FirstBank Basketball Club of Nigeria, popularly known as the “Elephant Girls”, have secured their spot in the final round of the Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA), scheduled to hold in Cairo, Egypt from 5-14 December 2025.

The Elephant Girls put on a commanding performance at the FIBA Africa Zone 3 Qualifiers in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, winning all three games. Representing Nigeria as the country’s sole team in the tournament, they overcame fierce competition from Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Benin Republic, Ghana, and Togo in the Zone. Their undefeated run included a 66–55 upset against home favourites CSA of Côte d’Ivoire and a thrilling 63–59 comeback win against FBA of Côte d’Ivoire, after trailing by 20 points in the second quarter.

The remarkable performance, marked by resilience, discipline skill, and mental strength, earned the team a triumphant return to continental basketball after a six-year absence. Emerging as champions of Zone 3 and the only English-speaking team to advance, the Elephant Girls have reaffirmed FirstBank’s long-standing commitment to promoting women’s sports in Nigeria and across Africa.

Speaking on the qualification, FirstBank’s Group Head, Human Capital Management and Development and Chairman of the Sports Council, Olumuyiwa Olulaja, said: “We are incredibly proud of the Elephant Girls for their outstanding performance. They have once again shown the world the strength, resilience, and excellence that define FirstBank. “At FirstBank, we are committed to continuing our support for sports in Nigeria and Africa, and this victory is a significant step forward in our mission to promote excellence in sports on the continental and global stage,” he added.

The Elephant Girls had advanced to represent Nigeria at the WBLA Qualifiers for FIBA Africa Zone 3, following an impressive Silver Medal finish at the Zenith Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Women’s Premier League. With their place secured in Cairo, the Elephant Girls are poised to showcase their talent on the continental stage once again, carrying the pride of Nigeria and the FirstBank brand as they aim to make history in the Final Round of the Women’s Basketball League Africa.

Soto Gallery, Ecobank, AFC, push art boundaries with the 2nd edition of +234 Art Fair

Following the tremendous success of its inaugural edition, Soto Gallery, in partnership with Ecobank Nigeria Limited, Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), and Main Sponsor Craneburg Construction Company are set to host the second edition of the +234 Art Fair. The highly anticipated event will take place from March 27th to March 31st, 2025, at the Ecobank Pan African Center (EPAC) in Victoria Island, Lagos, starting at 10 a.m. each day. The theme for the 2025 edition, “Championing Patronage in Nigerian Art”, will explore the transformative power of patronage in driving the growth and sustainability of Nigerian art. Steel Ministry earmarks N2.6bn on Ajaokuta Steel’s investment preparation

Ministry of Steel Development has earmarked N2.6 billion on the project preparation for investment mobilization for Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited out of the total budgetary allocation of N24 billion as contained in the 2025 proposed budget presented by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly. The Ministry also earmarked N250 million for the revitalization of Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited and National Iron Ore Mining Company, NIOMCO, Itakpe.

Meanwhile, Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited out of its total budgetary allocation of N6.8 billion allocated N6.3 billion for personnel cost, and also earmarked N2.4 million for overhead; recurrent gulped N6.4 billion; and capital got N3.9 million.
