494 bag first class as LASU graduates 20,604 into Nigeria labour market, honours Dangote, Kekere-Ekun, Adebola

A total of 494 students bagged First Class degrees, as the Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo graduates 20,604 students in the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing the press on the activities lined up for the 29th and 30th convocation ceremonies of the institution. 

This is just as the university is set to confer honorary doctorate degrees on Mr. Akin Kekere-Ekun –  Doctor of Business Honoris Causa (Entrepreneurship Finance Management), Mrs. Harriet-Ann Omobola (Bola) Adesola  – Doctor of Business Honoris Causa (Corporate Finance and Governance) and Alhaji Aliko Dangote, -Doctor of Business Honoris  Causa (Entrepreneurship Industrial & Human Capital Development).

Giving a breakdown of the statistics, Prof. Olatunji-Bello said, “Of the 7,621 students who graduated from the First Degree programmes in the 2024/2025 session,  262 came out with First Class honours, 106 with Unclassified (MBBS/BDS) Degrees. 3,155 graduated with Second Class Upper Division, 3,439 with Second Class Lower Division, 622 with Third Class and 37 with a pass.

“I am delighted to announce that Ayilara Lawal Olawale of the Project Management Department with a CGPA of 4.96 (First Class Honours) is our overall best graduating student for the 2024/2025 academic session.

“While the following is the breakdown of graduating students for 2025/2026 Academic Session. Of the 8,653 students who graduated from the First Degree programmes 232 came out with First Class honours, 3,545 graduated with Second Class Upper Division, 4,157 with Second Class Lower Division, 678with Third Class and 31 with a pass.

“I am also pleased to announce that Adebanjo Samuel Oluolamide of the Aerospace Engineering Department with a CGPA of 4.97 (First Class Honours) is our overall best graduating student for the 2025/2026 academic session.”

Prof. Olatunji-Bello  who is concluding her five-year tenure in the next few months, announced that 1,508 students are bagging academic masters, 900 professional masters, 618 postgraduate diplomas, 238 academic PhD and 119 are getting professional doctorate degrees. 

As part of the activities lined up for the convocation  ceremonies  a Convocation Lecture titled; “From LASU to the World: Harnessing the Nigerian Diaspora as the 7th Region for National Development,” will be delivered by Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

Honourable Tasir Wale Raji, a member of the  House of Representatives, Epe Federal Constituency, will chair the occasion. Moreover, the Senate of the university has approved the  conferment of  the prestigious rank of Distinguished Professorship on Professor Rafiu Olaoluwa Okuneye and Professor Olatunji-Bello 

Listing some of the giant strides recorded in the last one year by her administration, the VC said LASU retained her position as the most sought university by admission seekers in Nigeria, signposting the confidence reposed in Lagos State University by prospective students.

“For the second consecutive year, LASU emerged as the most subscribed university in Nigeria, attracting over 84,000 first-choice applications in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. This remarkable achievement earned the University formal recognition at the 2026 National Tertiary Admissions Performance Merit Award as Nigeria’s most preferred institution among admission seekers.

“LASU retained its position as the Best University in West Africa in the Universita IndonesiaGreenMetric World University Rankings for the fourth consecutive year while recording an improvement in its global ranking. The University also maintained its standing as Nigeria’s leading state university and remained among Africa’s highly ranked universities in recognised international assessments.

“The University sustained its rich academic tradition with the delivery of twenty (20) inaugural lectures across diverse disciplines, providing platforms for professors to share the outcomes of years of scholarly research and intellectual inquiry.

“The annual Distinguished Personality Lecture continued to attract eminent national figures, reinforcing LASU’s role as a marketplace of ideas where academia, government, traditional institutions and industry engage in meaningful conversations on issues of national importance.

On Wednesday, 14 January 2026, the Oniru of Iru Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, delivered the 2026 Distinguished Personality Lecture.”

The VC also expressed happiness with be positive impact being made by alumni of the university in various fields globally.
