Gov. Babangida Zulum of Borno says the state will partner with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPC) to ensure the successful implementation of its proposed solar power plant. Zulum gave the assurance on Wednesday in Maiduguri when the board chairman of NNPC, Mr Ahmadu Kida, led a delegation of the company on a courtesy visit.

The governor described the proposed solar project as a potential game changer, saying the existing electricity distribution system is not sustainable. He said the state government would collaborate with NNPC to ensure the successful execution of the project which is expected to improve electricity supply and support economic development

The governor commended NNPC’s management for its operations in Borno and assured the company of the government’s readiness to provide security for its exploration activities. He clarified that the suspension of previous exploration activities in the state was not as a result of security challenges.

According to him, a large number of security personnel had been deployed to the exploration site before the state government learnt about the suspension of operations. On gas development and supply, Zulum said he had approached the Federal Government on the matter and was informed that President Bola Tinubu had approved the payment of N68 billion.

Earlier, Kida thanked the state government for approving 145 hectares of land for the proposed solar power plant. He sought continued support and collaboration to facilitate the successful implementation of the company’s projects in the state.

Kida commended the state government for its efforts in restoring security, developing infrastructure and improving living conditions. He said that the improved security situation had encouraged renewed activities in Maiduguri and other parts of Borno.

He said NNPC was committed to working with the state government to advance Nigeria’s energy security and economic development.

The chairman stressed the importance of community engagement, local ownership and collaboration with security agencies to ensure the safe and sustainable implementation of the projects. He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to transparency, accountability and creating a lasting value for Nigerians and host communities. NAN
