Customs endow trade and investment research, policy advisory hub at NIIA
Comptroller General of Nigeria Custom Service has set up Bashir Adeniyi Centre for International Trade and Investment. The centre is a trade and investment research and policy advisory hub under the auspices of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA). Graciously endowed by the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the Centre was established to promote thought leadership and innovation in international trade and investment. BACITI is dedicated to advancing sustainable economic development through research, capacity building, policy advisory, and consultancy services.
In addition, BACITI Economic Insight provides in-depth analysis on timely and relevant economic issues. In its recent edition, it examined recent developments in U.S. trade policy and the ongoing trade war. The re-imposition of broad-based U.S. tariffs under the Trump 2.0 regime signals a return to aggressive protectionism. This has significant implications for global trade, Africa’s economic trajectory, and Nigeria’s oil-dependent economy.
The report by the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs NIIA’s Bashir Adeniyi Centre for International Trade and Investment (BACITI) explores how the new U.S. trade policy undermines AGOA privileges, jeopardizes non-oil exports, and places pressure on Nigeria’s fiscal and foreign exchange position. It presents strategic options for Nigeria, including deeper regional trade via African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat AfCFTA bilateral trade diplomacy, and a pivot to industrialization and value-added production. Featuring charts, trade data, and policy recommendations, it’s an essential read for policymakers, researchers, trade analysts, business leaders, SMEs and everyone navigating a more protectionist world.
