FGN takes possession of eight transformer from Lagos port
Federal government has cleared eight power transformers from the Lagos Port under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) for installation in different parts of the nation. The clearing of the transformers was delayed due to challenges at the port for several months, thus constraining the smooth execution of the PPI targeted at enhancing power supply to consumers nationwide. But indication are that all the transformers have been cleared by the FGN Power Company, a special purpose vehicle established by the Federal Government to execute the PPI, thus signalling the installation nationwide. those who have knowledge of the project, said “in all 10 transformers were imported into the nation. Before now, two had been cleared, installed and energised. The last clearing was done between July and August 2023. Also, nine Mobile Substations have arrived in Nigeria. Ajah Mobile Substation has been delivered to the site and installation is currently ongoing. All 10 Mobile Substations have been manufactured.”
According to FGN Power, “the PPI seeks to modernise, rehabilitate, and expand the national grid by investing in the electricity value chain (generation, transmission and distribution systems) of the power sector. The PPI will deliver the much-needed electricity supply and spur economic growth across the country with FGN Power Company managing and supervising the project to ensure accountability, coordination, and best practice implementation of the initiative. Technical implementation of the PPI will be led by Siemens, with the support of the German Government along with a host of EPCs, financiers, and supporting regulators and agencies.” Specifically, phase one is targeted at essential “quick-win” measures to increase the end-to-end operational capacity of the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry to 7, 000 megawatts, MW. While phase two would expand Nigeria’s Transmission and Distribution Grid to enable evacuation of up to 11 MW, phase three would lead to the further expansion of the nation’s capacity to 25,000MW.
Recently, the Managing Director of the FGN Power Company, Mr. Kenny Anuwe, said the phase of the one project had reached over 80 percent. He said “the company was created as a dedicated entity with a specific purpose: to secure funding, efficiently coordinate stakeholders, and establish effective commercial and contractual agreements. Its primary objective is to oversee the implementation of the PPI projects, which are aimed at transforming Nigeria’s power sector and enhancing the overall quality of life for all Nigerian citizens.”
