Gross earnings for accommodation sector stands at N2.5bn in 3 years — NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) yesterday said the gross earnings for the accommodation sector stood at N2.5 billion between 2010 and 2012.
This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja by the Statistician-General of the Federation, Dr Yemi Kale.
The NBS said the gross earnings for the accommodation sector in Nigeria stood at N638.10 million in 2010; N683.9 million in 2011, and N730 million in 2012.
“The sector’s gross earning was dominated by income from accommodation totaled at N343 million in 2010; grew by N7.8 million or 2.29 per cent to reach gross income of N350.8 million in 2011.
“In 2012, there was a higher level of growth of N35.5 million or 10.03 per cent amounting to N386.5 million,’’ the NBS said. It said that the second largest earnings were generated from income from bar (beverages) which totaled at N150.8 million in 2010 and increased by N68.6 million or 45.49 per cent to N219.4 million in 201.
The bureau said there was a decline of N42.8 million or 19.50 per cent to N176.6 million in 2012.
It stated that the third largest contributor was income from restaurants services with a gross income of N64.2 million in 2010. “The 2011 saw a growth of N11 million or 17.09 per cent to reach a total of N75.2 million, and further grew by N25.5 million or 33.81 per cent to total at N100.5 million in 2012. The least contribution to the accommodation services was the income from camping ground, recreation, vehicles and articulated vehicles totaling N914.86 million.
It stated that the total cost of goods purchased for the sector was N33.2 million in 2010.
“This declined by 8.52 per cent and 41.40 per cent in the following years, amounting to N30.4 million and N17.8 million in 2011 and 2012 respectively. A total of N24.2 million was the highest purchase made for restaurant items in 2010.
“In 2011, bar items drastically rose by 70 per cent to N21.4 million from the N6.6 recorded in 2010 to become the highest purchase of the year,’’ it stated The bureau said in spite of a decline from the previous year, bar items remained the highest purchase made with N11.5 million in 2012.
It said restaurant items declined noticeably across the years from the N24.5 million recorded in 2010 to N5.5 million or 76.9 per cent in 2011 and further down to N4.3 million or 22.74 per cent in 2012. “Other purchases ranked lowest across the years. Total input cost for the accommodation services in Nigeria was N393.5 million in 2010, and grew by 1.85 per cent to N400.5 million in 2011.
“But the figure declined slightly by 5.89 per cent to reach N376.8 million in 2012,’’ it said.
