The Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS has elected Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara as its new chairman, just over a year after he won an election that sparked a four month civil war in the world’s largest cocoa exporter. “We have unanimously agreed that the President of Cote d’Ivoire Alassane Quattara would take over as Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government,” outgoing chairman and Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan told reporters at the end of a two day ECOWAS summit in the Nigerian capital Abuja.
