Nigerian Equities Market dips as investors lost another N102.7bn
The Nigerian Equities Market ended today’s session in red as the All-Share Index (ASI) fell by 79bps to 26,598.94 points following price depreciation in DANGCEM (-3.9%), NIGERIAN BREWERIES (-4.0%) and NESTLE (-1.2%). Similarly, YTD loss worsened to -15.4 per cent and market capitalisation declined by N102.7 billion to N12.9 trillion. However, activity level advanced as volume and value traded rose by 30.7 per cent and 92.1 per cent to 243.0 million units and N4.8 billion respectively. The most active stocks by volume were ACCESS (52.6m units), WAPCO (28.2m units) and GUARANTY (21.8m units) while DANGCEM (N1.8bn), GUINNESS (N607.0m) and GUARANTY (N583.1m) led by value.
Sector performance for indices under our coverage was mixed. The Consumer Goods and Industrial Goods indices lost 1.8 per cent and 1.6 per cent respectively consequent to losses recorded in NIGERIAN BREWERIES (-4.0%), NESTLE (-1.2%) and DANGCEM (-3.9%). Trailing, the Insurance index lost 0.8 per cent following sell pressures in MANSARD (-3.0%) and AIICO (-3.0%). Meanwhile, AFR-ICT index gained 0.7 per cent following gains in MTNN (+1.2%) and CHAMS (+8.3%). Similarly, the Banking and Oil & Gas indices rose 0.4 per cent and 0.1 per cent respectively as buying interest in ACCESS (+2.8%), UBA (+0.8%) and FORTE (-1.9%) buoyed the indices.
Investor sentiment as measured by market breadth (advance/decline ratio) fell to 0.8x from 0.9x recorded yesterday as 12 tickers gained against 15 losers. The top gainers were LEARNAFRCA (+9.8%), CHAMS (+8.3%) and CORNERST (+8.3%) while PZ (-10.0%), NCR (-9.1%) and GUINNESS (-7.7%) were the top losers. As sentiment still remains weak, we expect the bearish run to continue.
