Stock market posts marginal loss, ASI down 0.1%
Today, the local bourse posted a marginal loss following sell pressure on bellwether stocks – BUACEMENT (-2.2%), NB (-1.2%), and MTNN (-0.1%). Consequently, the NGX ASI dipped 0.1% to 50,594.97 points, YTD return moderated to 18.4% (previously: 18.5%) while market capitalisation declined ₦16.8bn to ₦27.3tn. Meanwhile, activity level diverged asvolume traded fell 6.2% to 121.2m unitswhile value traded increased 45.7% to ₦4.2bn.
Across sectors within our purview, performance was bearish as 4 indices lost while 2 gained. The Consumer Goodsand Oil & Gasindicesgained 0.4% and 0.3% respectively, due to buy interest in DANGSUGAR (+6.3%), FLOURMILL (+1.6%), ARDOVA (+4.2%), and ETERNA (+5.8%). Conversely, the Industrial Goods and Banking indices fell 0.5% and 0.3% sequentially owing to price depreciation in BUACEMENT (-2.2%), CUTIX (-2.2%), FIDELITY (-3.9%) and UBA (-0.7%). Similarly, the Insurance and AFR-ICT indices fell 0.1% and 3bps respectively due to sell pressure on CORNERST (-9.3%), CHIPLC (-1.5%), and MTNN (-0.1%).
Investor sentiment, as measured by market breadth, decreased to 0.14x from 0.16x as25 stocks advanced, 16 declined while 66 closed flat. In the next trading session, we maintain our bullish outlook as investors take position in relatively attractive stocks.
