NGX closed session on a negative note
The Nigerian equities market closed today’s session on a negative note, as the NGX All-Share Index (ASI) declined by 0.28% to close at 251,211.67 points, while market capitalisation also fell by 0.26% to settle at N163.10trn. Consequently, the ASI’s year-to-date return declined to 61.43% from 61.88% in the previous session.
The negative performance was driven by losses in MTNN (-3.01%), ACCESSCORP (-2.25%) and GTCO (-0.38%), which outweighed gains in BUACEMENT (+3.20%), OANDO (+1.45%) and WEMABANK (+1.61%).
Market activity strengthened, as total volume traded advanced by 88.71% to 1.04bn units, while value traded rose by 56.39% to N53.63bn. VFDGROUP (+8.21%) recorded the highest trading volume at 367.32mn units, while UACN (+0.00%) accounted for the highest transaction value at N21.51bn.
Market breadth was negative at 0.83x, indicating a higher number of losers relative to gainers, as thirty (30) stocks declined against twenty-five (25) advancers. LEARNAFRICA (-10.00%) emerged as the session’s top loser, while HMCALL (+10.00%) led the gainers’ chart.
Yesterday the NGX shed N468.63 billion to close at N163.530 trillion on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, as trading activity on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) closed on a bearish note despite substantial liquidity.
Investors traded a total of 548,646,300 equity shares valued across 47,203 transactions. Despite the high volume, the decline in banking, industrial goods, and consumer goods stocks pulled down the key market indicators.

Market activity was strongly driven by top tier banking tickers. Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) led single-stock volume activity with 88.73 million shares traded, followed closely by United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) with 48.84 million shares, Fidelity Bank Plc with 45.64 million shares, Access Holdings Plc with 41.81 million shares, and Zenith Bank Plc with 34.21 million shares.
In the ICT sector, Chams Holding Company Plc also recorded significant trading volume at 29.69 million shares. Activity across the trading boards showed that the Main Board recorded the lion’s share of market volume with 396,997,715 shares executed in 28,945 deals. The Premium Board followed with 135,334,823 shares traded in 15,093 deals.
